Building a Sustainable Wardrobe in Five Easy Steps
Have you been dreaming of the perfect sustainable wardrobe, but don’t know exactly where to begin? Do not worry! I’ve got your back!
Here’s my top five tips for building the sustainable closet of your dreams!
1.) SHOP YOUR OWN CLOSET
The first key to building a sustainable wardrobe is working with what you’ve got! Did you know that one of the best ways to start is by starting with what you already have? Sooo many articles of clothing go unused, end up in landfills, etc., and that’s why it’s so smart to take a look at your closet and figure out what your favorite pieces are, and start there!
Another great option for starting with what you have is doing clothing swaps with friends. Get together with a few friends and see what you guys can trade. This makes it so simple for clothes that are already in your hands to be better worn and loved!
2.) INVEST IN HIGH QUALITY, SUSTAINBLE GARMENTS
When you have the time to research some of your favorite pieces, pick out a few that jump out to you. Investing in high quality, sustainable garments is something that costs a bit more than fast fashion, but this means that you are paying for what you get! Sustainable clothing is always made to last and is always in style. If you need some inspo, check out the Ava shop page here. We have a several items under $100 that I know will love to live in your closet, and out on display, for years to come.
3.) FOLLOW YOUR FAVORITE BRANDS AND WATCH OUT FOR SALES
Supporting your favorite brands and small businesses doesn’t have to be hard. Following them closely and watching for sales is always a great idea for those of you who are on a budget! Just remember that while shopping sustainably can seem like it is more expensive, the quality and production standards make it worth your while, as they are made to last. When you buy sustainable garments, you are supporting every single person who creates them, including the garment workers, the designers, business owners, and more.
4.) SELL OR DONATE YOUR FAST FASHION ITEMS FOR EXTRA CASH
Similar to doing clothing swaps with your friends, there are so many ways to trade in your clothing items for a few extra bucks. I know when I was building a sustainable closet, I spent a lot of time selling my fast fashion items so I could save up for the sustainable pieces I had my eyes on. Get creative with it! Some great places are, plato's closet, buffalo exchange, crossroads trading, depot, & Poshmark.
5.) REMEMBER THAT LESS IS MORE
When building a sustainable wardrobe, it is so important to remember that less is more! When picking out pieces try to think of all the awesome ways you can style them and wear them in more ways than one. (Think jackets & belts, for example) This gets your creative juices flowing, and makes it so simple for you to pick out the products and clothing items that you know you will love for years to come!
With Love!
xx Jenny
